AS the Christmas break approaches, there was some good news for the Sunderland B senior squad as they defeated Stanley in the latest round of senior inter-club fixtures.

The 4-1 win (40-39) lifts the Sunderland squad back into the fight for a play-off place.

The Sunderland A team’s game against South Shields, due to be played this week, has been cancelled and will be rearranged in January,

H In the Denny Cup, Sunderland’s conquerors Stanley have gone out to Hartlepool.

At Stanley, Kevin Wall won 23-12 while John Thurlbeck went down 23-13. At Hartlepool, both Stanley squads were well beaten – David Bolt lost 26-10 and Gary Smith lost 22-11 which left Hartlepool the winners by 26 shots and they will next face Lincoln.

This weekend, Sunderland’s current club champion Gary Smith heads to West Denton to face Copeland’s S.Walker.

The winner will progress to the latter stages of the competition due to be held at Lakeside and will face Hartlepool’s Glenn Skipp on Saturday, February 2 at 10am.

H In the national competitions, Sunderland’s final entry in the pairs went out as Billy Ferry went down 21-7 at home to South Shields Ian McIntosh.

On Monday, Ferry will pair up with Locky Todd in the Over 60s pairs and will entertain The Parks’ Ian Brown at 6.30pm. The winner will face Joe Flett and Tommy Jopling.

H The club competitions at Crowtree are progressing well. In the senior singles, there was a repeat of last year’s final as holder Tommy Jopling took on Joe Flett.

Sadly for Jopling, there was no repeat win as an inspired Flett ran out a 21-6 winner.

In the men’s pairs, Billy Simpson and Jimmy Tumilty defeated Mickey Duke 19-5 while John Smith and Fred Knubley performed another great escape with a last-end three to defeat Stevie Angus 14-13.

Billy Roberts and Frankie Froud defeated Dale Fenwick 15-9.

In the senior singles, Peter Thomson (snr) held his nerve to beat Tony Grimes 21-20 while Terry Todd beat John Smith 21-8.
