SUNDERLAND A produced a fine performance to clinch a comfortable 52-20 win over West Denton in the national over-60s double fours bowls competition.
At Crowtree, Pat Collins, Billy Hearne, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham eased to a 26-11 win over W. Young, while, up at West Denton, despite suffering a delay due to traffic, Joe Flett, John Jones, Fred Knubley and Billy Ferry also enjoyed a convincing success, 26-9 win over J. Hume.
In the next round, Sunderland A will face Stanley, who defeated Houghton 56-33. The tie will take place on Friday, November 18, at 10.30am.
In the same competition, Sunderland B entertain Durham on Friday, November 11, (12.30pm). The winners of both ties will meet each other in the last 32 – offering the chance of an all-Sunderland clash.
H Sunderland begin their Denny Cup campaign today against a decent Parks outfit, with the winners due to face either South Shields or Durham in the next round. The losers will drop into the Denny Plate and will face Houghton on November 19.
H Sunderland Ladies were due to open their Yetton Trophy campaign against the Parks. However, due to the Parks being unable to field a team, the Wearsiders received a bye and will face South Shields in the next round. Shields enjoyed a 106-53 win over Gateshead.

H There is no local interest in the ladies competitions. The total number of entries across eight competitions only came to 35 which is another indicator the women’s game is still in decline.
Another indicator is the withdrawal by the Durham County Ladies from the Atherley Trophy and the withdrawal from next season’s John’s Trophy outdoor competition.
H Durham County Over-60s suffered a disappointing 164-151 defeat to Yorkshire at Darlington in the John Dodsworth trophy.
H The Durham County Under-25 squad are in action tomorrow, facing Yorkshire (12.30pm start). The home leg is at Hartlepool, with the away leg at York.
H Sunderland A’s scheduled senior inter-club fixture at Hebburn on Wednesday, November 16, has been put back a week to the 23rd but will still start at midday.
