DURHAM University kept up their promotion hopes with a hard-fought 2-1 success against Doncaster in the Investec Women’s League’s Conference North.
Philippa Lewis and Emma Onien netted in three dramatic second-half minutes to put Sophie Hawkins’ side in control, though a 65th-minute strike by ex-Sunderland Ladies stalwart Lisa Garbutt ensured a nervous final few minutes for Durham, who responded well to their previous week’s loss to Beeston.
The students remain three points behind leaders Beeston with five games to go, starting away to Whitley Bay and Tynemouth on Saturday at The Parks on Saturday (12.30pm). Durham suffered a shock defeat in the derby earlier in the season, so will be fired up to avenge that costly loss.
H Sunderland Broom are seventh in the North League’s Division Two North East after going down 3-1 at home to sixth-placed Whitley Bay and Tynemouth thirds – their third defeat of the month.
