Stephenson races to glory

Have your say

SUNDERLAND Clarion’s Craig Stephenson put in a dominating performance at Teesside Clarion’s Criteriums at Prissick on Sunday in blustery conditions.

Stephenson showed strong legs and determination to attack the bunch with 12 laps to go and ride solo to take his first victory in the 3/4 race.

The chasing bunch were unable to do anything as Stephenson powered away from them with nearly half a laps advantage by the finish line.

It was a strong performance by the Clarion riders with Tony Dickinson sprinting for fifth, narrowly missing out on the podium in a tight finish.

The podium was completed by Jacob Kriehn (Achieve-Skinnergate Racing) and Matthew Worton (Blackhawk Bikes).

Paul Cottrell came tenth, making it a Clarion trio in the top 10. Neil Wallbank, the fourth Sunderland rider, did a good job of policing the race to ensure that anyone thinking of trying to catch Stephenson would think twice.

On Sunday, a strong Clarion team tackle the Sloan trophy, in Stamfordham, hoping for a good result in one of the region’s premier road races.

H Team Sky enjoyed a successful day at the Giro del Trentino yesterday as Kanstantsin Siutsou won stage two while Sir Bradley Wiggins moved up to fourth in the general classification.
