PETERLEE youngster Sophie Allen clinched a brilliant silver medal on her debut for Great Britain’s tumblers in the Loule Cup, held in Portugal.

To make the achievement even greater, it was the 12-year-old’s first attempt on an international level.

The tumbler, who trains at Deerness Gymnastics Academy in Ushaw Moor, was one of three club members to represent Britain.

She said: “I have been tumbling four years and couldn’t believe it when I was selected for the GB team and even more surprised and amazed to come second.

“It was a great experience going to Portugal and I can’t wait for another opportunity to represents club and country.”

Glen Wharton, head of tumbling at Deerness Gymnastics Academy, added: “It is fantastic that Deerness tumblers are continuing to be picked to represent Great Britain at international level and continuing to win medals on the international stage.

“It is always a great honour to represent your country and it’s down to the hard work of all the tumblers and coaches, as well as the support of their families, that our volunteer-led club continues to achieve success and recognition not just at national but also international level.

“Sophie has done particularly well to achieve second place in a tough competition in her first international.”
