NEWCASTLE Vipers’ play-off dreams look doomed after two weekend defeats.
Title-chasing Cardiff Devils proved too strong for Danny Stewart’s men at Whitley Bay on Saturday, but Vipers will be devastated to have lost 1-0 at mid-table Hull Stingrays in a tight battle last night.
Rivals Dundee Stars’ victory over Coventry gives them a seven-point lead over Newcastle in the race for eighth place, with just eight points to play for.
Though Vipers meet Dundee twice on the final weekend, the Scots are all but certain to guarantee eighth place by beating hapless Edinburgh this Saturday.
Against Cardiff, Vipers twice came back to within a goal of the visitors, thanks to Mike Prpich’s strike and Jaroslaw Rzeszutko’s only goal of the second period.
Vipers fell 4-2, with Cardiff short-handed, but Rzeszutko again cut the deficit before the visitors ran away with the game, scoring four unanswered goals.
Hull had Lee Mitchell firing home the only goal of the game.
