LAST weekend was supposed to be the highlight in the calendar for Bowls Durham with the county finals at County President Ken Raper’s home green at Lanchester.
However, heavy overnight rain left the green under water and the finals day was cancelled.
The majority of the finals will now take place tomorrow, except the pairs which will take place on Tuesday. The blue riband singles event has already been rearranged and took place on Tuesday.
In the final, Darlington RA’s Andrew Kirtland took on Owton Lodge’s David Fenwick.
The early exchanges saw Fenwick lead 7-4 before Kirtland rattled off six shots without reply to lead 10-7.
A Fenwick treble levelled the final at 10-10, but any thoughts of a nail-biting second half were wiped away as it was all over in the space of six ends.
Full house counts on ends 17 and 19 helped Kirtland seal a 21-11 win. It was his fourth singles title – with his first some 17 years ago!
