AN angler hooked himself a prize along with a fish when his first cast of the day proved lucky.
Durham County Council’s annual sea angling competition was won by Hugh Talbot, 62, of Grants Houses, when he reeled in a cod weighing 4.64lb just five minutes into the competition.
Hugh, who entered the challenge after a three-year break, said: “This is the first thing I’ve ever won. I’m chuffed to bits.
He added the celebrations were doubled when his nephew Nathan Rudkinds, 14, won the junior section of the competition.
The event, held on Sunday, offered anglers the chance to win prize money totalling £5,500.
Paul Irwin, principal leisure officer for the council, said: “The numbers of participants in this competition boosts the local economy at a time when visitor numbers are low so it is an important event in the county’s calendar.
“I’m delighted that once again Durham Heritage Coast, Seaham Angling Club and HM Coastguards have supported the event.”
