Grindon Social destroy Cheemas to close gap at top of snooker league

GRINDON Social had a 5-0 win against Cheemas to help close the gap on Biddick A, at the top of the Westoe Removals Sunderland Snooker League division two, with a game in hand.

Alan Mustard showed some form in compiling a 32 break in his singles. Biddick A could not achieve a whitewash against the Duck as Lee Dixon beat Graham Smith to snatch a point for the Duck.

Terry Froud with a 17, Mick Riley with 26 and 23 and Rod Turnbull with 27 took the first three singles for Biddick, and Riley and Adamson took the pairs for a 4-1 result.

An interesting match took place in the second division between Murton Officials and St. Gabriels. Robin Midson potted the last black but went in-off to give the frame to Bill Longley.

Stephen Clementson and Jim Ashcroft took Murton into a 2-1 advantage before a tough fourth frame went to Robert Taylor.

The pairs was a thriller with Rackstraw and Grimes holding a 16 point lead with only 18 left on the table before Midson and Ashcroft clawed their way back to win 58-56.

Seaham Cons had a 4-1 win against Biddick B, after losing the first frame but responded well to take the remaining frames.

The Victory surprised the Railway who are in third place by claiming a 3-2 success.

Steels B moved further ahead in the first division with a clean sweep against Pennywell Comrades B. Tom Freeman had a 31 break in the pairs, after all the singles had been comfortable.

Mill View A helped their cause as they limited Hylton A to a 3-2 success. Keith Johnson beat Norman Leslie to give his team encouragement, before Bob Boyce and Darren Browne took Hylton into a 2-1 lead. Kevin Alderson made it all square before Browne and Leslie took the pairs to claim the overall result.

Whitburn are showing good form at the moment and won all the singles against the Avenue before Moore and Henderson claimed a consolation in the pairs.

Mill View B met Steels A and shared the two opening frames before Ken Sands and John Spruce took them into a 3-1 lead. Charlton and Ayre proved the stronger team as they took the pairs to prevent a heavier defeat.

A 41 break by Gary Ablett of Woodside A was the highlight in the match against Hylton B. Chris Watkin took the third single to pull one back and Daz Harman pulled it level. Ablett and Milne took the pairs for Woodside. Woodside’s B team shared the singles before Jassan Qazi had a 41 in claiming the pairs.

Green Baize are strong at home and stopped the recent recovery of Farringdon in a 4-1 success. Peter Dambrosie took the first and Dean Wilson dominated the second. An excellent third frame saw Dean Moore beat Andrew Grant, before Jeff Burn restored the lead with Ian Stewart having a 38 break in losing. Hazard and Stewart took the pairs against Dambrosie and Burn 65-42.

Mark Anderson had a 33 break for Pennywell A and was followed by Joe Turner and Paul Wyatt in winning the singles. Mark Baker stopped the rot and Rutland and Bell took the pairs in a good response.

H Representatives are reminded that the monthly meeting will be held at the Avenue on Thursday, March 3, when the draw for the next rounds will be available. Could the teams ask their members to give an indication if they wish to join the summer league.
