JOSH Goodall beat top seed Ashley Hewitt 6-3 6-2 to win the Aegon GB Pro-Series at Sunderland Tennis Centre on Saturday.
Goodall, 27, is poised to give up life as a player to go into coaching after struggling financially. However, he had too much for young prospect Hewitt (21), who has risen to a world ranking of 368 this year.
It was even to start with, but Goodall began to get to grips with Hewitt’s serve as the first set progressed. Goodall broke in the seventh and ninth games to seal the set 6-3.
Goodall then had a chance to break early in the second set but Hewitt bravely fought back from 40-0 down to level at one game all.
Hewitt, though, was broken to go 4-2 down.
He then had a break point of his own to get the set back on serve, but Goodall hit back to win the game and go within one game of the title.
Hewitt’s spirit was broken and Goodall broke again to complete the victory.
