BOLDON’S Rhys Thompson showed his determination to make an impact in the Durham County Championship by posting the third best score in the qualifier.

The young Boldon golfer carded a fine round of 71 to finish third in the qualifier at Castle Eden which decided the top 64 to go through to the championship proper

Billingham’s Bradley Hildreth (69; nett 67) had the best round of the day, one shot better off than Lloyd Bond (Seaton Carew), while six players were just behind Thompson on 72, including Washington’s Imran Aziz, Andrew McCarrick (Boldon), Andrew Bell of Durham City and, using home course knowledge, Castle Eden’s Stuart Brown.

Boldon’s Gavin Nesbit progressed with a round of 74, while Castle Eden’s Thomas Harbord won through with his 75 and several players posted 76, inclyding Houghton’s Jonathon Cossar, Wearside’s Daniel Hair, Boldon’s David Conway, Wearsider Martin McCririck (South Shields), Ryan Dixon and J. Dowson (Castle Eden), Ramside’s Paul Atkinson and Jack Richardson of Durham City.

Nine players marched on with rounds of 77, including Aaron Scott and Anthony Black (Washington), Wearside’s Michael Calvert and Castle Eden’s Jack Trewhitt.
