DURHAM won the Northern Boys’ Championship qualifier at the City of Newcastle club yesterday, pipping Cheshire by a single shot.

Durham now represent the Northern Group at the national finals, which are scheduled to be played at Sandiway Golf Club on August 26-28. Incredibly, the top five teams were separated by just four shots.

Eaglescliffe’s Sam Donald posted the best two rounds for Durham, 71 and 73, while Castle Eden’s Jack Ainscough was the model of consistency, carding two rounds of 74.

The best five morning and afternoon scores counted in the six-man event.

Result: 1 Durham 743, 2 Cheshire 744, 3 Lancashire 747, 4 Yorkshire 747, 5 Northumberland 747, 6 Cumbria 785, 7 Isle of Man 841
