Double gold as Tom enjoys gr-eight show

CITY of Sunderland’s Tom Whelan started the season in brilliant form when winning a medal in each of his eight events, in the Northumberland and Durham Swimming Association Autumn Graded Meet, at the Aquatic Centre.

The 14-year-old reduced his 400 individual medley time by a massive 17 seconds and knocked 10 seconds off his 400m freestyle personal best to win gold in both events.

He went on to record a further four personal bests and took silver medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle and bronzes in the 50m and 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 200 medley events.

Luke Pye (10) and Alexandra Spencer (15) won a hat-trick of gold medals.

Luke swam to victory in the 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke.

He also won silver medals in the 50m freestyle and 200m breaststroke and a bronze in the 200m freestyle.

Alex came first in the 400m medley, 800m freestyle and 200m breaststroke, recording significantly improved times in the longer events.

Alex also landed three silvers in the 100m and 200m backstroke and in the 400m freestyle, plus a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle.

Jennifer Sharp (14), Jay Whitehead (14), and Andrew Markham (15) all won two golds.

Jennifer triumphed in the 800m and 400m freestyle, while Jay came first in the 50m and 100m freestyle and finished second in the 50m breaststroke. Andrew won the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly.

Amy Dixon (12) secured a gold in the 200m medley and finished third in the 400m medley.

Fourteen-year-old Callum Walker picked up a medal of each colour, finishing first in the 50m backstroke, second in the 50m freestyle and third in the 400m freestyle.

Joe Whelan (11) and JJ Robins won seven silvers and three bronzes between them.

Joe was second in the 1,500m freestyle and sealed two more silvers in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle. He was also third in the 50m breaststroke. JJ finished second in the 1,500m, 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle events and won bronzes in the 400m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Ten-year-olds Lara Greggs and Tom Brumwell both competed in 400m events for the first time and came away with medals.

Lara was second in the 400m freestyle and third in the 400m medley, while Tom finished third in the 400m freestyle.

Alisha Ballentine and Adam Boxall, both 12, each won a silver medal.

Alisha came second behind Amy Dixon in the 200 medley, while Adam was second in the 200m backstroke.

In the 13-year-old age group, Matthew Phillips, Joseph Pomfret, Jamie Kemp, Eve Larsen and Lauren Exley all enjoyed success.

Matthew won silver in the 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, plus bronzes in the 100m freestyle and 200m medley.

Joe was second in the 1500m freestyle and Jamie, Eve and Lauren won bronzes in the 100m butterfly, 800m freestyle and 50m breaststroke respectively.

Fourteen-year-olds Will Robinson, Darcy Palmer, Amy Henshaw and Jay Manners completed Sunderland’s haul.

Will won double silver in the 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke, while Darcy was second in the 200m butterfly and third in the 200m breaststroke.

Amy and Jay each won silvers in the 200m and 50m breaststroke respectively.
