Broom bank on tough test at Sheffield

SUNDERLAND Broom firsts face a difficult final away match of 2012 on Saturday.

Last week’s home clash with Lincoln Roses was postponed because of a frozen pitch at Sandhill View.

Sunderland dropped a place to ninth in the men’s North League’s Division Two East as a result, and Andy Gayner’s side have a tricky trip to fourth-top Sheffield University Bankers this week (1.45pm).

The Bankers were held 1-1 by Durham University seconds last week. The students host Timperley at Maiden Castle on Saturday (1.30pm).

Struggling Sunderland seconds have a huge challenge, with an away game against table-topping Newcastle University thirds, who have won seven and drawn three of their 10 games in the North East League’s Intermediate 1.

Sunderland thirds, forced to give Billingham Synthonia a 3-0 walkover when they failed to field a team last week, will hope for a first win of their Intermediate 2 campaign when they entertain pointless bottom club Stockton fifths at Sandhill View on Saturday (noon).

The Wearsiders, though, have managed just one goal in their last eight matches.

H In the women’s leagues, Sunderland Broom head to second-top Newcastle firsts in Saturday’s North League Division Two North East clash at Coach Kane (11am).

Last week’s home date with Morpeth seconds was frozen off. Durham University thirds, after two successive call-offs, host Whitley Bay and Tynemouth seconds at Maiden Castle (noon).

In the Premier Division, third-top Durham University seconds – whose home clash with bottom club Wigton failed to get the go-ahead last week – have a crucial trip to unbeaten leaders Bowdon (3pm).
