SILKSWORTH IM A sent out a strong warning to reigning Division One champions Thompson Insurance A with an outstanding 10-0 victory over St Chad’s.
Graeme Barella started the rout with a win over the experienced Northumberland County defender Jimmy Scope, who had no answer to the attacking and powerful play of his opponent.
Anthony Barella then defeated Durham County player Keith Weatherby 11-9, 14-12, 11-8 in an excellent game with both players turning on the style.
The point of the match saw a 15-stroke rally with both players off the table with loop-to-loop strokes before Barella hit a stunning winner down the line.
The game continued in familiar fashion with another outstanding performance by Ryan Richardson when he secured a 3-2 victory over Steve Penman 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7.
St Chad’s were playing excellent table tennis but Silksworth were just too strong and the Saints finally waved the white flag in the final set. It was an outstanding performance by Silksworth and if they can consistently play their strongest side, they must be in the mix for the title.
Thompson Insurance A had Darren McVitie playing his first match of the season against St. Gabriel’s A. He was joined by team-mates Andrew Wilkinson and Allan Thompson, who was playing his first game following a bad neck and shoulder injury sustained in a recent car crash.
