CITY of Sunderland’s top young swimmers are heading to Berlin next month to face international competition.

Head Performance Coach Danny Thompson said: “We have a new racing strategy for the 2013/14 season for our performance programme at City of Sunderland.

“The 18 or so athletes who competed at the Scottish National Championships in December did very well against world class competition – so that’s something we’re looking at doing again, as we continue to get stronger, heading towards Rio 2016.

“We are now taking swimmers out of their ‘comfort zone’ as it will help further improve our results – transitioning from continued national level success to success on the International stage as we move towards Commonwealth Games and European Junior Championship Trials in April.

“The International Swim Meeting at Berlin will provide our athletes the opportunity to race against competitors from over 40 different nations in an unfamiliar environment.

“That will further improving their ability to handle any situation.”
