DIVISION One leaders Silksworth IM A maintained their title challenge in the Table Tennis Sunderland and District League with an excellent 7-3 win over second-placed St Chad’s.
Silksworth were represented by the Barella brothers (Anthony and Graeme) and Bernie Morris, with Keith Weatherby, Jimmy Scope and Adam Curran making up the St Chad’s team.
Anthony Barella and Scope had a close game, Barella taking the first end relatively easily by 11-5.
However, Scope stormed back with some excellent defensive play to take the second end 11-3 and the third 11-9.
Barella had to win the next two games to win the set and both ebbed and flowed before he finally drew first blood to Silksworth by edging the final two ends 11-7 and 11-8.
Keith Weatherby drew St Chad’s level with a 3 games to nil win over Bernie Morris.
However, Graeme Barella restored Silksworth’s lead with a straight sets win over Curran before Scope and Morris played out an epic.
Scope eventually won the fifth and deciding end 11-6 after allowing a 2-0 lead slip.
Silksworth won the next three sets, the Barella brothers combining to take the doubles before winning individual sets over Curran and Weatherby.
Curran provided a glimmer of hope for St Chad’s with a great win over Morris, but Graeme Barella beat Jimmy Scope in straight sets and Anthony Barella ensured Silksworth gained maximum points with a great attacking display over Weatherby.
Thompson Ins. A remain third and their B team had a 7-3 win over rivals Redby CA A to move out of the bottom two.
Maurice Cheek was man of the match, having remained unbeaten throughout the game, combining with Shirley Gelder to win the only doubles set.
Once again, the result did not reflect the closeness of the match, which saw seven of the 10 sets being decided in the fourth or fifth end.
Weeks 11 and 12 results: Silksworth IM A 7 St. Chads 3; Thompson Insurance B 7 Redby CA A 3.
St Gabriel’s B maintained their mid-table position with a good win over close rivals Redby CA.
St Gabriel’s Dave Revell and Redby’s Dave Thomson were voted as joint men of the match following their excellent individual performances, which saw Revell winning all three sets and combining with Geoff Young to win the doubles.
Thomson won two of his three sets, only losing out to Revell by the smallest of margins in the fifth and deciding end.
Week 12 results: St. Gabriels B 6 Redby CA 4.
Sacriston St Bede’s C had a relatively straightforward 9-1 victory over a young St John’s C side.
Ian McPherson and Lee Maher were unbeaten for St Bede’s and combined to win the doubles set.
They were well supported by Colin Pritchard, who won two of his three sets, losing to the fast-improving Jacob Helm.
