Mckie dashes Bolt’s bid for third title on the trot

DAVID Bolt saw his hopes of retaining the Durham County singles title for a third successive year dashed.

On a tricky Barnes Park surface and in very blustery conditions, the Silksworth star was edged out 21-19 by Roker Marine’s Richie Mckie in the District 2 green finals. In the other singles tie, Marine’s Ray Robinson defeated Barnes Park’s Tommy Jopling 21-12.

Mckie and Robinson now progress into the last 16.

In the pairs green finals, Silksworth’s Michael Laydon and Ian Riches beat clubmates Neil Ridley and Gary Farquhar 23-12, Roker Marine’s John Smith and Richie Mckie saw off Barnes Park’s Michael Spain and Tommy Jopling 29-7 and Bobby Graham and Ray Robinson (Roker Marine) squeezed past Paul Baker and David Bolt (Silksworth) 21-18.

The remaining fours final went to an extra end as Marine’s Bobby Graham, Gerry Patterson, Ray Robinson and Pete Thomson pipped Silksworth’s Michael Wright, Jaxon McKenna, Terry Todd and Michael Laydon 19-18.

In the first of the Two Bowl singles green finals, Phillip Dixon won the all-Silksworth affair, sinking Michael Laydon 16-12.

H In the BowlsEngland Club Double Fours, Houghton Dairy Lane suffered last-bowl heartache as a fortunate shot edged Elm Tree home 44-43.

David Morgan, though, defeated Leadgate’s Brian Reed 24-13 in the Over-55 pairs to set up a trip to Hartlepool Old Boys’ William Maddison. The other Houghton pair, skipped by Ken Briscoe, lost 21-9 at Elm Tree.

Dairy Lane’s last hope in the Champion of champions is out after Locky Todds uccumbed 21-7 to Backworth’s Roy Goldsmith.
