Local football: Horden strengthened before relegation clash

Horden CW assistant manager Brian Honour reckons it will be like having five new players in the side when they line-up against Morpeth Town at Bedlington tonight in a crucial Skilltrainingltd Northern League relegation clash.

Manager Simon Corbett yesterday swooped to sign Mattie Hyson from Seaham Red Star and Chris Dunwell, whose last club was Darlington RA.

"They are two experienced players, just what we need at present and the pair go straight into the side. Mattie has scored goals wherever he has played while Chris is big, strong central defender," claimed Honour.

In addition, the Colliers welcome the return of a trio of players.

Jamie Arthur, Steve Thomas and Neil Gutteridge have all been sidelined for some time and Honour is in no doubt they've been missed.

He added: "The three lads are all decent players and their inclusion, together with the two newcomers, will give the squad a big boost."

Honour thought his side were as good as top-six team Newcastle Benfield for 80 minutes on Saturday and did not deserve to lose by three goals, two of which were scored in the final minutes.

"I believe we shaded them for most of the match but gave away two poor goals which killed off our chances.

"Now, we've got to be up for it tonight. Morpeth are bottom and we are third from the basement so the outcome could be vital in the relegation scrap."

The game at Bedlington is not the only which will affect the relegation zone. Ryton, who have tendered their resignation to the SNL as a precaution, are just eight points ahead of second-bottom West Auckland Town before their visit to Dunston UTS.

West Auckland, inspired by their 5-1 rout of Consett at the weekend, go to Billingham Town and fifth-from-bottom Esh Winning meet Newcastle Benfield at Waterhouses.

The results of the four games could see changes at the bottom of the First Division.

In Division Two, Seaham Red Star will need to make one change visiting Whickham. Hyson has joined Horden CW a boost for manager Andy Toman is the return of Jordan Hugill, who made his comeback from a broken ankle as a substitute on Saturday.

Before his injury, the talented youngster was offered trials by Kevin Ball at the Stadium of Light.

* Holders Whitley Bay will visit Shildon in the Quarter Finals of the FA Carlsberg Vase if they defeat Chertsey Town in the replay.

The prize for Marske United should they see off Whitehawk is a trip into Derbyshire to face Gresley while Norton and Stockton will visit either Willand Rovers or Barwell. The ties will be played on Saturday, February 27.
