Laydon and Riches’ loss proves costly

Silksworth’s Michael Laydon and Ian Riches enjoyed a 18-10 preliminary round win over Essex’s Mark Nullmeyer in the National Championships Pairs competition, at Worthing.

However, it wasn’t to be as they succumbing in the next round, losing 30-16 to Worcestershire’s Ryan Atkin, confirming a disappointing time for the Durham qualifiers.

The Darlington RA duo of Peter Coulson and Neil Buckley also went out in the first round, 21-18 to Suffolk’s Lee Spraggs.

In the Singles, Owton Lodge’s David Fenwick lost in the first round, 21-15 to Buckinghamshire’s Malcom Drage.

Darlington RA’s Andrew Kirtland defeated Surrey’s Robert Palser 21-14, only to go out in the second round, 21-13 to Cumbria’s Ryan Prince.

In the Two Bowl Singles, Neville Cross youngster Noah Cummings went out in the first round, 17-9 to Surrey’s Terry Downs.

Leadgate’s Gary Robson received a first round walk over and then moved into the last sixteen with a 14-11 win over Derbyshire’s Martin Allsop.

Unfortunately, Robson lost the last sixteen tie 15-8 to Somerset’s Louis Ridout.

Sadly the greens at Worthing have come in for criticism, but as the National Championships are moving to Leamington Spa, the local council have cut back on the green preparation and on the surroundings.

H The final Sunderland and District competition will be completed next week as both the champion of champions events will be played to a finish.

On Tuesday, the quarter-finals take place at Seaham Town at 6pm, with the semi-finals on Thursday, at Grindon Mill, at 6pm. The final will be on Friday at Houghton Town, at 6pm.

H There was a home winner in the Seaham Town Open Pairs competition as the Henderson father and son combination, took the honours with a 10-9 win in the final.

H The EIBA have announced the seven-man team to compete in the Co-Operative Funeralcare Test matches in October.

Included in the squad is Stanley’s Gary Smith.

Scotland provide the opposition with the Test matches taking place at Stanley, on Wednesday, October 16, and Thursday, October 17.

The format will be sets play with two Triples and three pairs matches on the first day, followed by six single matches on the second day.

One point will be awarded to the winner of each match and the team with the most points will be crowned winners.

Tickets will be available from Stanley Indoor Bowls Centre from Monday, September 2.

H Silksworth Bowling Club are holding a memorial game in memory of the late Frankie Adams.

The game will take place at Silksworth on Sunday, September 1, at 1pm and will feature the Silksworth Harold Howey 2013 title-winning team against the Silksworth Earl Cup team 2013 title winning team.

The winners will be presented with the Frank Adams Memorial Trophy which will be presented by the late Frank’s family.

Spectators are all welcome to pay tributes to a real gent of bowls.
