Junior football: Henderson the goal hero
Sunderland Boys U13s maintained their impressive start to the season with a narrow 1-0 win at home to South Northumberland.
Both teams showed excellent commitment in a very close game which saw both teams defend extremely well in the first half.
The game was there for the taking for both sides and as the second half wore on it became clear that one goal would be decisive.
Sunderland pressed with striker Kieran Henderson's pace and strength causing the visitors trouble.
The striker was rewarded with the winning goal 15 minutes from time. He got on the end of a through ball and finished superbly with a volley from twenty yards.
Sunderland's next game is next Thursday against Chester-le-Street at Ryhope CW (5.30pm kick-off).
Sunderland U15s were 8-0 winners when they hosted Derwentside at Herrington CW.
This week, Houghton Kepier hosted the Gardiner Shield Year 7 five-a-side competition.
The schools represented were Houghton Kepier, Venerable Bede, St. Aidan's, Sandhill View and Monkwearmouth.
The winners were Venerable Bede, who remained unbeaten throughout the competition.
In game one, Bede played hosts Houghton Kepier and took a 1-0 lead through their player of the competition Davis Keillor-Dunn.
Bede attempted to see the game out but Houghton equalised in the last minute.
Bede played Monkwearmouth in their second game and won 1-0 with the goal coming from Nathan Bennett.
Game three saw Bede defeat Sandhill View 2-0 with Keillor-Dunn scoring both goals.
In their final game, Bede came up against St. Aidan's and needed a point to win the competition. The game was close and ended goalless so
Bede took the title.
St. Aidan's finished runners-up, with one win and three draws. Houghton Kepier finished third, Monkwearmouth fourth and Sandhill View fifth.
In the U14 County Cup, St Aidan's reached the quarter-finals with a 7-2 win over Cardinal Hume School of Gateshead.
Aidan's led 5-0 at half-time following goals from Joe Hamblin, Harry Richardson, Peter Greenwell, Priestly Griffiths and Elliot Howey.
The visitors scored two early goals in the second half, but Hamblin went on to complete a hat-trick.
In the U15 league, Academy 360 beat Farringdon 5-2 with a hat-trick from McDermott and other goals from Norton and McLeod.
