SUNDERLAND’S young swimmers scooped a stunning 39 gold medals at the Sunderland Summer Splash event.
Held at the Aquatic Centre, the City of Sunderland team beat off opposition from all over the North East and Scotland to bring home their massive medal haul.
Jodi Bunker and Lucy Ellis shared the honours with an impressive haul of five gold medals each.
Jodi made it a clean sweep in the 11-year old-freestyle events – at 50m, 100m and 200m distances – as well as topping the podium in the 200m backstroke and 50m butterfly.
Fourteen-year-old Lucy took the splash titles in the 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley events.
Twelve-year-old Jessica Thompson also scooped four golds in the 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 100m and 200m breaststroke, while Matthew Wylie chipped in with a fabulous four, taking the S9 disabled category titles in the 50m and 200m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 200m breaststroke.
Freya Rayner (12) took the 50m sprint titles in the backstroke and butterfly and Emma Sinclair (15) won the 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke gold medals.
Lucy Walton (13) and Joe Middleton (16) also topped the podium in their respective 100m and 200m freestyle events.
Further gold medal-winning performances came from Callum Dann (10) in the 50m butterfly, Amy Henshaw (11) 200m butterfly, Lauren Patterson (12) 50m freestyle, Gabrielle Burdess (12) 100m freestyle, Jennifer Sharp (12) 200m butterfly, Andrew Markham (13) 200m backstroke and James Burns (14) in the 50m backstroke.
The Sunderland swimmers also excelled in the team events, taking the girls’ 12 years and under 200m freestyle and 400m medley titles, the boys’ 12 years and under 200m medley and 400m freestyle titles, as well as the boys’ 13 years and over 200m freestyle and the mixed 8x50m cannon titles.
