HOUGHTON progressed into the Denny Cup second round for the first time in six years as they ran 85-84 winners over Sunderland.

Last season, Sunderland ran out winners by over 30 shots but with all four rinks having to be played at Houghton, it was a different story this time around.

Both sides had two winning rinks. Houghton’s John Doyle, Tom Hayes, Jack Thurburn and an outstanding Peter Harding romped to a 32-8 win over Bobby Graham.

The other Houghton success saw Tom Patterson, M.Baker, J.Scullion and Tom Burt inflict a 23-16 defeat on Joe Flett.

The two Sunderland winning rinks were George Brown, Billy Roberts, Terry Todd and Tommy Jopling, who defeated Jeff Wilson 32-18, while Michael Wright, Peter Brickle, Dan Todner and Billy Ferry defeated Jimmy McAdoo 28-12.

The win for Houghton sets up a second round tie against Stanley, who thumped Durham 147-44.

Sunderland drop into the Denny Plate and will face Durham. Both ties take place next Saturday at 10am.
