Herrington spring a major surprise

The outdoor bowls season is now in full swing, despite the bitter weather, with national and county competitions taking the limelight, writes Richard Mckie.

In the Bowls England double fours, the eye-catching result was Herrington Workmen’s tremendous 36-35 win over Silksworth.

Herrington will entertain Darlington RA’s B team in the next round.

Seaham Town also had a cracking win, defeating Whitehead Park 50-23, sealing a trip to Roker Marine, who outgunned Consett 48-13.

Houghton Dairy Lane complete the local interest after a fine 44-35 success against Leeholme, with Pelton Fell, who pulled off a surprise 38-37 win over national champions Darlington RA A, their next opponents.

In the Top Club competition, Silksworth defeated Hartlepool The Park 5-0 and now visit either Alnwick or Backworth, while Roker Marine sneaked past Spennymoor 3-2 to set up a trip to Owton Lodge. Houghton Dairy Lane lost 3-2 to Elm Tree.

Silksworth’s Terry Todd moved into the third round of the Over-55 singles following a bye and a walkover against clubmate Alf Ferguson. Billy Ferry beat Pelton Fell’s Brian Brown 21-11 to set up a home tie against Houghton’s Locky Todd.
