Frank Booth sends Redby clear at the top of the Sunderland and District table tennis league

REDBY CA A moved three points clear at the top of Division Two in the Sunderland and District League after a hard-fought 6-4 victory against Mortimer CA.

Frank Booth was on fine form for Redby, winning his three singles. Ken Tweedy and Malcolm Deneven both won once and Tweedy and Booth combined to take the closest of doubles victories, 13-11 in the fifth.

Ian Moore was the best of the Mortimer players with two wins, while David Cutler and Hugh Slater each avoided defeat in one of their matches to ensure no-one went away from the match empty-handed.

In Division Three, Redby CA B are up to second place after beating St Aidan’s B 7-3 and drawing 5-5 with Sacriston St Bede’s C.

Joe Muldowney showed why he used to play in higher divisions taking his three singles matches for the loss of just one end against St Aidan’s.

Howard Forster was not to be outdone and also won three times for Redby, while Allan Girdwood added the crucial seventh win to secure maximum points. Graham Sleep and Graham Brown each won once in reply.

Thompson Insurance A continue to exert their stranglehold on Division One after a 9-1 win against Silksworth IM A.

Chris Blake won his three matches fairly comfortably for Thompson and David Blackburne also won three times in his first appearance of the season. Allan Thompson added two singles victories but was beaten 3-0 in the opening game of the night by Alan Bickle, who produced an excellent performance.

St Chad’s remain third but kept up the pressure on second-placed Redby with a 7-3 victory against Thompson Insurance B.

The defensive skills of Saints’ Jimmy Scope and David Bissett were enough to secure each player three wins and the two then combined well in the doubles.

Maurice Cheek, Eddie Coxon and David Winterbottom each took one victory for Thompson but couldn’t find a fourth win to earn their side a point.

West CA A produced a good performance to defeat St Gabriel’s A 6-4.

Geoff Salter and Mark Shingler each won twice for West and John Williamson added another victory for the hosts, who also won the doubles.

David Robson took three wins at a canter for St Gabriel’s and Norman Pescod added a win, 3-1 against John Williamson.
