Former student Cat rocks Durham foes

DURHAM University firsts are guaranteed to finish third in the Investec Women’s League’s Conference North.

Sophie Clough’s side saw their promotion ambitions ended a few weeks ago, and last week’s 3-0 defeat to second-top Wakefield means the students have nothing to play for in Saturday’s final match against Stourport at Maiden Castle (2pm). Sally Walton hit Wakefield’s 12th-minute opener, before former Durham student Cat Horn and Gwen Smith finished off the visitors with two goals in three second-half minutes.

Wakefield go into the final match two points behind Brooklands Poynton in the race for the sole promotion slot.

H Sunderland Broom endured another disappointing defeat on the final day of their arduous season in the North League’s Division Two North East.

The Wearsiders succumbed 5-1 to Newcastle University seconds, who handed out a 17th defeat in 18 league matches for the beleaguered bottom club. Broom’s only victory came against second-bottom Morpeth seconds, who managed only two points more than Sunderland’s three.

In all, Sunderland managed just 10 goals, with 118 conceded.
