FORMER SUNDERLAND boss Mick McCarthy has been sacked by relegation-threatened Wolves.

Yesterday’s 5-1 derby defeat at home to Black Country neighbours West Brom proved to be the final straw for McCarthy after the result left Wolves third bottom in the relegation trouble.

McCarthy has been in charge at Molineux since July 2006 and had continually earned the backing of the Wolves board.

But a dire run of just 14 points from the last 22 league games has ended the Yorkshireman’s tenure.

Former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has been immediately installed as the bookies’ favourite to succeed McCarthy.
