Watford have rejected a £2million bid from Wigan for defender Adrian Mariappa, according to reports, writes Daniel Prince.

Newcastle have also seen three bids turned down for the 25-year-old in recent weeks, while Arsenal are said to be monitoring his situation.

Watford manager Sean Dyche recently slammed Newcastle over their bids for his vice-captain, which he described as “miles away” from the player’s worth.

It remains to be seen whether Dyche will be willing to backtrack and let Mariappa leave, but the Hornets appear unwilling to alter their reported £4million valuation.

Reports in the North East maintain Newcastle are still hopeful of sealing a deal for Mariappa, with Alan Pardew needing defensive cover as Steven Taylor will miss the rest of the season with injury.
