FORMER Sunderland duo Dean Whitehead and Rory Delap have both been released by Stoke City.

The two midfielders have reached the end of their contracts at the Britannia Stadium and new Potters boss Mark Hughes has allowed them to depart on free transfers.

Ex-Black Cats skipper Whitehead made 132 appearances for Stoke after moving from the Stadium of Light in a £5million deal in the summer of 2009.

Delap made 178 appearances under ex-Stoke boss Tony Pulis, but has struggled with injuries this season and spent two months of the campaign on loan at Barnsley.
