THE price tag Newcastle demand for Andy Carroll could make him one of the most expensive players ever in world football

The latest rumours suggest Liverpool may have to pay £40m for the Magpies’ striker.

And that would make him the fifth most expensive player in history.

He could soon be leapfrogged if Fernando Torres completes his £50m plus move from Liverpool to Chelsea.

Here are some of the biggest deals in football history:

Cristiano Ronaldo: The Portuguese winker cost Real Madrid £80m when moved from Manchester in the summer of 2009. Since then he’s scored 65 goals in 68 games for the Galacticos

Kaka: The Brazilian international cost £56m when he moved from AC Milan to Real Madrid in 2009 becoming the most expensive player of all time before being succeeded by Ronaldo. He’s found a bit tougher at the Bernabeu but has still managed 10 goals in 36 appearances.

Zinedine Zidane: Making up a Real Madrid top three is our favourite head-butting Frenchman Zidane, who moved from Juventus to the Galacticos in 2001 for £45.62m.

He spent five years in Madrid scoring 49 times in 225 games, winning La Liga in 2003 and the Champions League in 2002.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Became Barcelona’s biggest buy in 2009 when he signed a £40m deal from Inter, which saw Samuel Eto’o move to the San Siro.

The big Swede has now been sent out on-loan to AC Milan after being ousted from the Barca team by David Villa.

Luis Figo: He crossed the Spanish divide from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000 for £37m.

The Portugal playmaker spent five years at Madrid, netting 57 goals in 239 games. During his time at Madrid he won La Liga twice in 2001 and 2003 and the Champions League in 2002.

Hernan Crespo: The former Chelsea man comes in at number six after joining Lazio from Parma for £35.5m in 2000.

He played 55 games for Lazio and scored 39 times before the club’s financial troubles led to him being sold to divisional rivals Inter Milan.

David Villa: Cost £34m when he moved to Barcelona from Valencia.

The hotshot was one of the stars of Spain’s World Cup triumph in 2010 and has starred for Barcelona this season scoring 17 goals in 27 games for the Catalan giants.

Gianluigi Buffon: The most expensive keeper of all-time went to Juventus from Parma for £32m in 2001.
