MARTIN O’NEILL has revealed Sunderland are on the verge of sealing a deal for 6ft 5in defender Kader Mangane.

The 29-year old arrives on Wearside from Saudi club Al Hilal, whom he joined last year.

The 6’5” defender becomes Martin O’Neill’s second January signing, following the arrival French under 21 international Alfred N’Diaye last week.

The Sunderland manager said: “Kader is player who will add to the overall strength of our squad and give us options. He will improve competition for places and we are delighted to welcome him to the club.”

Speaking earlier today, O’Neill said Kader would be an excellent addition to the squad.

He said: “He wants to do it and wants to come and prove himself.

“We’re pleased to have him.

“He’ll add a bit of competition for places because we don’t want to leave ourselves short of February 1.

“He’s a biggish lad and pretty competitive. I think he wants to really have a go.”

Mangane began his career in his native Senegal before spending six years in Switzerland. He played for Lens and Rennes in the French Ligue One before moving to Saudi Arabia in 2012.
