SUNDERLAND got their pre-season campaign up and running with a 2-1 victory at non-league York City.

First half goals from Phil Bardsley and Oumare Tounkara proved to be enough for Steve Bruce’s side at Bootham Crescent in a profitable run-out for the Black Cats.

Bardsley crashed home the opener in the 13th minute before ex-Oldham loanee Tounkara doubled ther advantage before the interval.

York twice hit the woodwork in the first half but got their reward in the second when Jamie Reed converted a penalty after being brought down by Titus Bramble.

Craig Gardner was the only one of Sunderland’s new signings to feature, with the Black Cats now heading to Germany for a week-long pre-season tour.
