SHEFFIELD Wednesday are hopeful of extending their loan deal for Sunderland striker Connor Wickham.

The 20-year-old netted his sixth goal in eight games for the Owls in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic after moving to Hillsborough for a second loan spell last month.

Wickham’s loan is due to expire after New Year’s Day’s clash with Blackpool and Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is planning to hold talks with the England Under-21 striker then.

But Wednesday are already in talks with the Black Cats over keeping Wickham in South Yorkshire and hope to beat off competition from the likes of Championship rivals Nottingham Forest to secure a fresh loan for the £8million frontman.

Caretaker boss Stuart Gray: “With the confidence he has at the minute, Connor thinks he can score in every game, which is a great feeling for a striker.

“Sunderland are happy for him to stay with us, they’re happy for him to play.

“The only problem is when they’re not your players, you’re only a phone call away.

“The board are in dialogue with Sunderland about keeping him.

“Connor wants to stay, he wants to play week in, week out. But who is to say someone won’t come in with a big offer for him?

“He has done ever so well here, he is buzzing with confidence at the moment and credit to him because he has made the most of his spell with us.”
