DUNCAN Watmore grabbed a fine double – for his first Sunderland goals since joining from Altrincham – to help the Black Cats’ Under-21s secure an entertaining 2-2 draw against Chelsea on Saturday.
The point was enough to take Kevin Ball’s side back to the top of the Barclays U21 Premier League season, though West Ham will regain pole position with a draw or better at Wolves tonight.
Sunderland had a strong team on show, including Wes Brown, Cabral, Connor Wickham (pictured) and Modibo Diakite, and went ahead when Watmore curled a fine shot into the far corner of the visitors’ net in the fifth minute.
Islam Feruz levelled after charging down Joel Dixon’s hurried clearance, after a short back pass by Diakite, with the striker reacting quickest to hit home the loose ball.
Sunderland had a series of good chances, but Chelsea went ahead on 70 minutes when Alex Kiwomya fired hom from outside the box, following a corner.
Watmore equalised by volleying home on the run after Wickham flicked an effort over keeper Bradley Collins.
Sunderland are back in action on Monday, November 4, with West Brom visiting Eppleton CW.
