SUNDERLAND are lining up a £8million move for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, according to a report today.
The Daily Mail claims Black Cats scouts watched the Dutchman in Celtic’s win over Kilmarnock last night.
According to the article, the 23-year-old – who has two-and-a-half years left on his contract – is eager to move to the Premier League.
However, Sunderland could face competition from Everton for the Netherlands Under-21 international, who has also been linked with Newcastle United in the past.
Van Dijk is a long-standing target for Sunderland, although the Black Cats are unlikely to make a move for the defender until the summer.
When asked about the player last month, Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet said: “We were in talks with them (Celtic) from the past, but there’s a certain amount of money you can have, so I think it’s a bit too early.”
