GINO Peruzzi’s club doctor has spoken of his amazement that the Argentine full-back failed a medical at Sunderland.
The Velez Sarsfield medic, Dr Ricardo Coppolecchia, says he could not believe it when the news came through that the transfer had broken down because of the player’s physical condition.
He told Estudio Futbol: “Gino Peruzzi had an injury, it’s true, but he is totally recovered and can play.
“In the medical tests they will have analysed everything very carefully, and he is in perfect shape. He has even been playing for the Argentine national side.
“We think it is crazy that Sunderland have blocked him.
“If he returns to Velez, he can play immediately without any problem because he has done the pre-season work.
“I don’t know what happened in England.
“The injury he had wasn’t that serious, it could have been talked over.
“The player is in perfect condition and I don’t know what is going to happen from now on.”
Coppolecchia’s comments are the latest twist in a story of confusion, rumours and counter-rumours which have dogged the long-running transfer chase of a defender who was expected to be a key part of Sunderland’s plnans next season.
Peruzzi flew into England last week with officials from Velez Sarsfield with the highly-rated Argentine full-back’s move expected to be wrapped up quickly.
Agreement between Sunderland and Velez Sarsfield had been tied up weeks ago and there was no hint that a physical examination might derail the deal.
Velez are non-plussed by Sunderland’s medical report because they believe the player is as they maintain that the 21-year-old is in perfect condition.
A ligament problem is thought to be at the root of Sunderland’s concerns but Coppolecchia insists Peruzzi is fully fit and would be ready to play if he has a future at Velez.
