AZ ALKMAAR claim they have rejected an initial offer from Sunderland for American striker Jozy Altidore.
The former Hull City loanee is Sunderland’s prime attacking threat this summer, as the Echo exclusively revealed last month.
And the race for Altidore’s signature is beginning to gather pace, with Dutch club Alkmaar claiming they have turned down an offer from the Black Cats for the frontman and are waiting to see if Sunderland make an improved bid.
A spokesman said: “The first offer was not sufficient. We have to know. Now it’s wait and see.”
Sunderland are likely to persist in their pursuit of Altidore though after taking note of the striker’s 31 goals for AZ last season.
But the Wearsiders face competition from Italian giants Lazio for the 23-year-old.
