SUNDERLAND will test Wigan Athletic’s determination to hang on to winger Charles N’Zogbia in the current transfer window but will not pay over the odds for Steve Bruce’s long-term target.
It’s an open secret that the Black Cats desperately want to sign the former Newcastle wideman (left).
It’s only a matter of time too, before it happens.
The only questions are When? and How Much?
The Echo understands N’Zogbia is keen to be part of a revitalised and improving Sunderland side and would have joined the club in an instant last summer had the clubs been able to agree a price which satisfied both sides.
Wigan want £12m for a player Bruce signed for the Latics for half that sum.
Sunderland have not been prepared to go beyond £8m, resulting in a stand-off between the two clubs.
But the Black Cats will ask the question again of Wigan this month, adding a little to their original offer in the hope of doing a deal.
Wigan will feel that they can get closer to their asking price now Darren Bent has been sold to Villa for £24m, but Sunderland are aware that the player gets cheaper every month his current contract runs further and further down.
H Cardiff City have signalled their intention of hanging on to Sunderland target, striker Jay Bothroyd. “There have been no indications he wants to leave,” said Bluebirds boss Dave Jones.
