SUNDERLAND are due to have a second look at teenage Scottish striker Craig Wighton this weekend.
Dundee starlet Wighton has attracted interest from the likes of Swansea and Southampton, with Sunderland now also joining the queue for the 17-year-old.
Black Cats scouts watched Wighton in action for Brechin City, whom he joined on loan last month, against Forfar last weekend and they are again due to check on him against Ayr United in tomorrow’s Scottish League One clash.
Scotland Under-17 international Wighton signed a new three-year deal with Dundee during the summer, but has been linked with a £200,000 move to Southampton, although the SPL outfit have denied receiving a bid.
Sunderland have been looking at promising youngsters north of the border over the last couple of years after having a £600,000 bid accepted for Dundee United centre-half John Souttar last season.
Souttar travelled down to look at the Academy of Light facilities, before ultimately deciding to stay at Tannadice.
But the Black Cats remain keen to add promising youngsters to their U21 set-up, with ex-Altrincham winger Duncan Watmore emerging as a bright prospect during his 18 months at the Stadium of Light.
New Swansea signing Matt Grimes was one rookie Sunderland were keeping tabs on before the former Exeter midfielder moved to the Liberty Stadium in a £1.75million deal earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Sunderland, along with Hull City, have again been credited with an interest in Bolton winger Chung-Yong Lee, who looks likely to leave the Championship outfit this month.
Sunderland have repeatedly been linked to Chung-Yong – currently at the Asia Cup, in Australia – ever since Bolton dropped out of the Premier League two-and-a-half years ago.
The South Korean’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season and with a new deal looking unlikely, Bolton face the prospect of having to sell this month rather than losing him for nothing in the summer.
“I haven’t really spoken to him,” said Bolton boss Neil Lennon.
“I don’t know where his agent is at the moment. Maybe they are playing a bit of hardball.
“But there is interest in him. Again that’s a situation we don’t want to face but we’ll have to.”
