Sunderland reporter Chris Young gives his ratings after a vastly-improved display against Swansea.

Costel Pantilimon: Two excellent saves, plus a world class one, earned Sunderland a point 8

Billy Jones: Had his hands full with Montero and struggled to stop the crosses after the break 6

JOHN O’SHEA: Made a HUGE difference to the composure of the back four in his first game of the season 8

Sebastian Coates: Looked a different player alongside O’Shea rather than Kaboul. Much more solid 7

Patrick van Aanholt: Far less of a liability than in first two games, but did he need to track Ayew to the centre-circle for Swansea’s goal? 6

Lee Cattermole: Broke up Swansea’s play and prevented them playing their passing game. 7

Jack Rodwell: One of his best displays in a Sunderland shirt - strong, physical and always involved. 8

Yann M’Vila: Still finding his fitness, but Sunderland have clearly landed a quality performer. 7

Jeremain Lens: Set up Defoe’s equaliser, while Naughton couldn’t handle him in the last 20 minutes. 8

Jermain Defoe: Didn’t track Naughton for Swansea’s goal, but made up for it by netting a leveller. 7

Danny Graham: Control wasn’t always consistent, but set the tone from the front with his work-rate. 6

Subs:

Fletcher (for Graham 67): An inch away from stabbing home a winner. 6

Watmore (for Defoe 86): Had one run at Taylor where he won a corner. 6
