Sunderland Under-23s suffered a 3-2 defeat at Reading this evening.

The home side were well on top but had to wait until the second half before finally opening the scoring.

George Brady was caught out as he sliced Yakou Meite’s low cross into his own net six minutes after the restart.

The Royals made it 2-0 four minutes later when Josh Barrett converted a penalty, conceded when sub keeper Michael Woud - who had replaced the injured James Talbot - brought down Andy Rinohmota.

Andrija Novakovich made it 3-0 with 26 minutes left, after latching onto a back pass.

Sunderland kept going though and Josh Maja fired home to make it 3-1, before Elliot Embleton was on target with a superb free-kick.

But Sunderland’s late fight could not bring an equaliser.
