Forgotten man Valentin Roberge appears to have finally parted ties with Sunderland, just two months before his Stadium of Light contract was due to expire.

Roberge’s last first-team appearance for Sunderland came in August 2014, with the Black Cats unable to shift the French centre-half from the books since then.

The 28-year-old’s contract was due to expire this summer, but there have been reports in France that his deal has been terminated early and he is now a free agent.

Roberge – who made just 10 Premier League appearances – was one of three free agents signed by Sunderland in the summer of 2013 who all proved to be flops.

He spent last season on loan at French side Reims, but didn’t do enough to earn a permanent contract at the club and returned to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland’s efforts to offload Roberge again on loan last summer fell through at the last minute and he has spent this season training and playing with the Under-21s.
