SUNDERLAND hot-shot Duncan Watmore faces at least a month on the sidelines with a broken leg.

Watmore watched from the stands at the Stadium of Light last night as Sunderland Under-21s suffered a 2-1 defeat against Celtic to leave them on the verge of elimination from the Premier League International Cup.

The winger had limped off in Sunderland’s first group game in the competition against Villarreal last week, with subsequent scans showing he had fractured his fibula – an injury expected to keep him out for four to six weeks.

It’s a blow for Watmore, who has been the stand-out performer for the U21s this season and had been training with the Sunderland first-team squad.

Development coach Robbie Stockdale said: “It’s not as bad as we initially thought.

“But when you look back on the video, it was quite a meaty challenge.

“On the bright side, it could have been a lot worse.

“He had been on fire.

“But he’ll come back stronger. It’s just at the wrong time for him.”
