Sunderland are in Vienna AGAIN to track potential January transfer targets.
The Black Cats have a representative at the Ernst Happel Stadium this evening for the crunch World Cup qualifier between Austria and Wales.
Sunderland have been regular visitors to Austrian internationals over the last year.
First-team scout Gordon Chisholm took in Austria’s friendly against Holland in the summer where he was believed to be casting his eye on the home defence.
Then Sunderland boss, Sam Allardyce, was understood to be a fan of centre-halves Martin Hinteregger and Aleksandar Dragović.
While Allardyce has departed the Stadium of Light, current boss David Moyes knows defensive reinforcements will be required.
Austria flopped at the summer’s European Championships but their form pre and post Euros has been outstanding.
Marcel Koller’s team had been viewed as a dark horse in France, having topped their qualifying group by winning nine of their 10 games and keeping six clean sheets along the way.
Austria failed to win a game in the Euros but there has been no hangover, winning their first World Cup qualifier in Georgia last month, 2-1.
And Sunderland representative, Robert Cooke, is set to take in tonight’s match, along with scouts from across Europe, including Norman Wooster, from Newcastle United.
