EVEN Steve Bruce admitted he was a touch taken aback by Sunderland’s ability to land two such highly-regarded players in the January transfer window, writes Chris Young
As the injury curse set in at the start of the month, Bruce had turned to the foreign market to boost Sunderland’s depleted ranks.
Bruce set his sets high by targeting a player in Stephane Sessegnon who had been courted by the Premier League’s top four and another in Sulley Muntari who was polishing a Champions League medal eight months earlier.
The shock exit of Darren Bent intensified Sunderland’s pursuit of the pair and turned a proposed loan move for Sessegnon into a permanent deal.
But actually completing ambitious deals is another matter altogether.
