SUNDERLAND winger James McClean is unlikely to feature in tomorrow’s Stadium of Light clash with Arsenal.
McClean injured his ankle after a heavy challenge in the Republic of Ireland’s friendly with Poland on Wednesday evening.
The 23-year-old played on after treatment and was not in any great discomfort when he reported back for training at the Academy of Light yesterday afternoon.
But the ankle has subsequently swollen significantly and the former Derry City man is a major doubt to face the Gunners.
Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill said: “We have a problem with James McClean, who picked up an injury during the course of the game.
“He hurt himself in the first half, but continued in the second half and came off after, I think, 80 minutes in the match and arrived here, where his ankle is particularly swollen.
“That’s causing us some concern at the moment.”
