WES BROWN insists Sunderland’s defence must show the same determination to subdue Sergio Aguero, as they did with Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

Brown and central defensive partner John O’Shea were excellent in keeping the Premier League’s second top scorer Costa under wraps in last weekend’s stalemate against Chelsea.

But they face another stern examination of their credentials at the Stadium of Light tonight, with Argentine international Aguero looking to continue the goalscoring form which has seen him net 17 goals in all competitions this season.

Sunderland managed to prevent Aguero finding the net in three games against Manchester City last season, yet Brown knows the danger posed by the Premier League’s top scorer.

Brown told the Echo: “He’s a completely different type of threat to Costa, but just as deadly in that position he plays in.

“Aguero has got that low centre of gravity, he can do those quick-turns and he’s strong as well.

“But we just have to go into the game with the same attitude really.”

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has a couple of injury doubts ahead of tonight’s visit of the reigning Premier League champions, yet the Black Cats’ biggest headache may be fatigue after their exertions against Chelsea.

Man of the match Lee Cattermole, for one, was exhausted from his contribution to taking a point from the league leaders.

However, Brown knows that Sunderland will need to produce a similar effort if they are to extend their four-game unbeaten run tonight, as City look to end a run of four consecutive 1-0 defeats on Wearside.

“Every player has to work 100 per cent and put in a little bit more against the top teams,” added the former Manchester United man.

“Catts started that off against Chelsea and continued all the way through.

“We put everything in and managed to stop them scoring and got a draw.

“Now let’s hope it’s possible to continue our record against City.”
