Sunderland prospect Lynden Gooch has scooped the Barclays U21 Player of the Month award.
The USA U23 international has made a terrific start to the 2015-16 season, finding the net in all three of the young Black Cats’ opening fixtures against Norwich City, Reading and Tottenham Hotspur.
His form has been rewarded with the U21s award for August, following in the footsteps of teammate Duncan Watmore who won a monthly gong last year.
Gooch said: “It’s great, when I saw Duncan [Watmore] win the award last year I really wanted to get one of my own so I’m buzzing.
“I’ve had a great start.
“Last season was frustrating for me because I had a few injuries so it was important to get off to a good start this year, and I came back really fit for pre-season which I think has really paid off.”
Gooch made his first team debut in the 6-3 Capital One Cup win over Exeter City, which saw last season’s Barclays U21 Premier League player of the year Duncan Watmore net his second senior goal.
The American forward was also named on the bench for the Barclays Premier League clash against Aston Villa.
His U21 coach, Robbie Stockdale, added: “He has played well which is obviously a credit to him, but we do emphasis that it’s a team effort.
“It’s great that individuals pick up these awards and it’s been fully deserved he’s had a fantastic start to the season.”
