Ex-Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson is reported to have been approached by Sunderland over the vacant manager’s job.
The Daily Telegraph is reporting Sunderland’s sporting director Lee Congerton made contact with Pearson’s representatives following the resignation of Dick Advocaat.
Pearson is a free agent since being sacked by the Foxes in the summer despite keeping them up against the odds last season.
No appointment is imminent at the Stadium of Light and Pearson is understood to be one of several candidates Sunderland are considering.
Burnley boss Sean Dyche was also among the early favourites but he has distanced himself from the speculation, while David Moyes is not keen on a return to the Premier League with Sunderland.
Sam Allardyce remains the fans and bookies favourite but he has other commitments with his autobiography due out this month.
