SUNDERLAND will continue their spending spree by splashing out around £10million on Gino Peruzzi and Emanuele Giaccherini, with the international duo both on the verge of sealing moves to the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats have already bolstered their ranks with eight summer signings and that tally is now expected to enter double figures with deals provisionally agreed for Argentine right-back Peruzzi and Italian attacking midfielder Giaccherini.

Peruzzi’s club, Velez Sarsfield, issued a statement yesterday afternoon confirming an agreement with Sunderland had been reached and the 21-year-old will fly to England today with two club officials to finalise the deal.

But it is the move for Juventus and Italy man Giaccherini which will be seen as the real coup for the Wearsiders.

There were widespread reports in Italy last night that Giaccherini had agreed to a four-year deal with Sunderland after Juventus accepted a £7m offer for the 28-year-old.

Sunderland have been in talks since last week with Juventus and initially the Italian giants were reluctant to part company for Giaccherini, who impressed in this summer’s Confederations Cup in Brazil.

But after landing Carlos Tevez in a big money move from Manchester City, Juventus have had to balance the books and their initial price tag of over £9m has plummeted.

Juventus head coach Antonio Conte has reportedly now agreed to offload to Giaccherini, who is expected to travel to Wearside to finalise the move.

Sunderland, who have also been linked with Juventus striker Alessandro Matri, will hope they can tie up deals for both Giaccherini and Peruzzi, although the latter’s switch now looks to be a formality.

The Echo reported yesterday how Peruzzi had left the door open on his £4m move after rejecting Sunderland’s initial financial package.

Peruzzi has now reached an agreement after a subsequent offer from the Black Cats and he will undergo a medical on Wearside later this week.

“Velez Sarsfield and Sunderland Association Football Club have reached an agreement to transfer the player Gino Peruzzi,” said a statement from the Argentine club.

That will represent a major boost to head coach Paolo Di Canio, whose only specialist full-back is out-of-favour Phil Bardsley.

Sunderland, who missed out on French left-back Benjamin Mendy to Marseille, still hope to make it a double swoop of Argentines by landing Atletico Tigre’s Lucas Orban.

As the Echo revealed on Monday, Orban has been expected to make a decision on his future by the end of the week.

But there were rumours circulating last night that Orban is now likely to join Spanish side Villarreal, who have also been firmly in the hunt for his signature.

Meanwhile, Greek winger Charas Mavrias is expected to travel to Wearside next week to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical with Sunderland.

Sunderland agreed a £2.5m fee with Panathinaikos last week for the highly-rated Mavrias, but have been waiting for the 19-year-old to shake off an abdominal injury before putting him through a medical examination.
